Indian Railways probe Brahmaputra Mail mishap

Siliguri (West Bengal), Dec 10 (ANI): The Indian Railways has started an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the Sunday night's derailment of the Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail, the railway officials said today.

Mehtab Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Katihar Division, Northeastern Frontier Railway, refused to comment on the cause of the accident.

"We can't say anything preliminary because the kind of accident that has taken place," Singh said, adding "We are still investigating."

However, railway officials said sabotage could not be ruled out.

One person was killed and nearly 50 others were injured when fourteen bogies of the DN Brahmaputra Mail derailed about 15 km from New Jalpaiguri junction late on Sunday night.

The train, which was heading to New Delhi from Guwahati derailed between Rangapani and Nijbari railway stations at around 11 p.m.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.

The deceased identified as Mohammed Imroz who was working with pantry car of the train, as confirmed by the rescuers.

In August 1999, at least 400 people mainly military personnel were killed when the Brahmaputra Mail rammed into a stationary train at Gaisal station near Siliguri in West Bengal. (ANI)
