CPI-M labour union puts off strike in West Bengal

Friday, April 9, 2010 | AA
Kolkata, April 9 (IANS) The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the labour arm of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Friday postponed its proposed transport strike in West Bengal to protest the rise in petroleum prices across the country.

"We have decided to postpone the proposed transport strike on April 13 as all non-Congress and non-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) parties have convened a meeting on April 12 to chalk out the next plan of action against the price rise issue," CITU said.

"We are waiting for the outcome of the meeting. We will take our next line of action once we get to know the final decision taken by all non-Congress and non-BJP parties," CITU state president and senior CPI-M leader Shyamal Chakraborty told IANS.

"For the time being, we are postponing the transport strike," he said.

Chakraborty said the CPI-M and all other Left parties had repeatedly requested the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to check the skyrocketing petrol price.

"But the centre has hardly paid any heed to our words. Thus, we decided to go on a transport strike in West Bengal as we had already called strike in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh protesting the same issue," he said.
